Simple Requirements
In addition to Faculty of Graduate Studies requirements and the course requirements described below, students should consult their home department in the Schulich School of Engineering for any additional program or course requirement(s).
Master of Science
A minimum of 12 units. course or course is normally required, together with at least one of course, course, course, course or course, and at least one other Environmental Engineering course.
Students with non-engineering undergraduate degrees may be required to take additional prerequisite courses at the undergraduate level.
Doctor of Philosophy
For applicants with Bachelor of Science and/or Master of Science degrees in Environmental Engineering:
A minimum of 6 units. One of course, course, course, course or course is normally required.
For applicants with Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Engineering, but not in Environmental Engineering:
A minimum of 9 units. course or course is normally required, together with at least one of course, course, course, course or course.
For applicants with a bachelor's degree in Engineering, but without a completed master's degree:
A minimum of 18 units. course or course are normally required, together with at least one of course, course, course, course or course, and at least one other Environmental Engineering course.
Students with non-engineering undergraduate degrees may be required to take additional prerequisite courses at the undergraduate level.
Advanced Credit
The applicant must make Advanced Credit requests as part of the admission process, in consultation with the proposed supervisor and the Graduate Director. Credit will not be given for course work taken as part of another completed degree/diploma or for courses taken to bring the grade point average to a required level for admission. Students who receive advanced course credit when admitted to a master’s program may be able to accelerate the completion of their degree.
Flexible Grade Option (CG Grade)
Students admitted to the Schulich School of Engineering will not be allowed to request the Flexible Grade Option (CG Grade) for any course that is applicable to their degree; or apply any course awarded a grade of CG towards their graduation requirements.
Students may choose the CG grade for a course taken extra to load.
The use of the CG grade will affect students’ eligibility for internal awards.
Time Limit
Expected completion time is two years for the Master of Science degree, and three years for the Doctor of Philosophy. Maximum completion time is four years for the Master of Science and six years for the Doctor of Philosophy degrees.
Supervisory Assignments
All students are required to have a thesis supervisor before the second annual registration. For students in the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degree programs, a supervisor is normally appointed at the time of admission.
Required Examinations
Final thesis oral examinations follow the requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and the home graduate program.
Thesis-based candidates are typically admitted with financial support provided by an interested supervisor, the department, or an official organization. For information on awards, see the Awards and Financial Assistance section of this Calendar.
