Simple Requirements

Completion requirement

The degree consists of a three-stage laddered pathway: Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, and the Master of Education.


The Master of Education, with a specialization in Interdisciplinary Studies requires:

  • 12 units of coursework in an available topic area* in the program; and

  • 12 units of coursework in an available topic area* in the program; and

  • 12 additional units of Educational Research courses: course, course, course, course.


The Master of Education with a specialization in School Counselling requires:

  • 12 units of coursework in the Foundations of School and Counselling Psychology topic area in the program; and

  • 12 units of coursework in any one of the following topic areas* in the program:

    • Mental Health and Wellbeing in Schools: Social Justice in Practice

    • Supporting and Enhancing Children’s Mental Health

*Not all topic areas are offered every year. For availability, consult the Werklund School of Education website.

Completion requirement

Advanced Credit

Applicants to the Graduate Certificate must make Advanced Credit requests as part of the application process. Credit will not be given for course work taken as part of another completed degree/diploma, or for courses taken to bring grade point average to a required level for admission.


Flexible Grade Option (CG Grade)

Graduate Programs in Education in the Werklund School of Education will not permit the Flexible Grade Option (CG Grade) for any course offered by the School.

Students may not choose the CG grade for a course taken extra to load.

The use of the CG grade will affect students' eligibility for internal awards.


Credit for Undergraduate Courses

Graduate Programs in Education does not normally accept undergraduate courses for credit toward graduate degrees.


Time Limit

The expected completion time is one year for each of the program credentials in the laddered pathway to a maximum of two years for each of the Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Master of Education.


Academic Coordinator Assignments

An academic coordinator is assigned to the cohort of students in the course-based Master of Education program.
